Gordon plantations in West Cameroon. Nutrients return through litter fall in Pinus kesiya ex. Gordon plantations of West Cameroon. Litter production and nutrient return were studied in 14- and 36-year-old plantations of Pinus kesiya in a humid savannah of Cameroon. Litter fall was observed throughout the year with maximum fall in March in the two plots. Average annual litter production within the plantations amounted respectively to 8 293 and 9 867 kg-ha -year of which leaf fall contributed to 86 and 74 respectively and was found to be the main provider 78-95 of the nutrients that return to the soil. Nutrient translocation occurs within the older leaves before their abscission. This migration of nutrients N p K and Mg occurs from the leaves to the tree. The rates of litter decomposition in the two plots are 41 and 70 . With regard to nutrient turnover it ranges globally from 33 to 92 for N p Ca and Mg and is more than 100 for K which might have been leached during the rains. All these parameters especially translocation and return are mechanisms that confer on trees the capacity to adapt themselves to poor soils. Inra Elsevier Paris.
