We studied 49 cases of liver cirrhosis LC with ascites compared to 50 normal controls. Causes were posthepatic 37 alcoholic 7 cardiac 2 and cryptogenic 3 . Complications were upper gastrointestinal bleeding 24 hepatic encephalopathy 20 gastritis 28 hepatoma 5 2 renal hepatic syndrome 2 HbsAg 24 and hepaticpleural effusions 7 . Average PaO2 and SaO2 were mmHg and mmHg respectively .
