Nitrogen fertiliser had no effect on the growth and leaf mineral concentrations of either genotype. Irrigation increased the growth of both genotypes and the concentrations of p and K in the leaves but the concentrations of Mg and Ca were reduced. The following year the trees were lifted and replanted. The plants of Colt that had previously received irrigation produced longer total shoot lengths than unirrigated plants whereas there was no difference for p avium. The residual effect of irrigation slightly reduced the concentration of p in the leaves of both genotypes yet the concentrations of N K Ca Mg and Mn were unaffected.
