After selecting the Hand tool click and drag in any direction. You can access the Hand tool temporarily without actually switching tools by pressing Option spacebar or Alt spacebar. For a quick way to pan through your document make sure that the Hand tool is active. Then click and hold the mouse. InDesign will zoom out and display a red rectangle.
