The Antarctic summer is at its height and the fledged youngsters and remaining adults can at last leave their colony and head for the sea. Back in April the adults trekked inland across the pack ice to start the cycle. Then with the courtship rituals over and the eggs - one per pair - safely laid the males sat out the bitter winter incubating the precious packages on their warm feet. Ever since the chicks hatched in August their parents have been alternating food runs to the ocean their offspring growing fat on regurgitated offerings. Now though the youngsters huddle ignored and unfed in their creche. It s time to leave. The departing chicks are as big as their parents and patches of dark adult plumage show through their down. They must finish their moult before entering the sea but time is short late summer offers only a brief window in which to lay down enough fat to see them through the winter. January - when young birds are in the nest - is peak season at the collpa or clay lick in Peru s Tambopata Reserve. Each morning as the smaller parrots leave the exposed riverbank the first macaws arrive. Up to three species may be represented red-and-green blue-and-yellow and scarlet. They turn up in small parties alighting on nearby branches and jostling for FIND OUT MORE nature life Emperor_Penguin position. Then one bird takes the plunge - and within seconds they re all swooping down and clambering over the bank digging out beakfuls of clay. It was once thought that the clay serves to neutralise toxins ingested by the macaws but research at Tambopata now suggests that it is sodium the birds crave - an element in short supply here far from the sea.
