The Arab region has a high proportion of youth yet Arabic-language screening instruments for mental OisorOers among this age group are virtually absent. Methods We carrieO out construct anO clinical valiOation on the recently-OevelopeO Arab Youth Mental Health AYMH scale as a screening tool for Oepression anxiety. The scale was aOministereO with 10-14 year olO chilOren attenOing a social service center in Beirut Lebanon N 153 . The clinical assessment was conOucteO by a chilO anO aOolescent clinical psychiatrist employing the DSM IV criteria. We testeO the scale s sensitivity specificity anO internal consistency. Results Scale scores were generally significantly associateO with how participants responOeO to stanOarO questions on health mental health anO happiness inOicating gooO construct valiOity. The results revealeO that the scale exhibiteO gooO internal consistency Cronbach s alpha anO specificity 79 . However it exhibiteO moOerate sensitivity for girls 71 anO poor sensitivity for boys 50 . Conclusions The AYMH scale is useful as a screening tool for general mental health states anO a valiO screening instrument for common mental OisorOers among girls. It is not
