Formulae which relate power to the recombination frequency r between the genes the genetical properties of the quantitative trait controlled by the QTL and the design parameters are developed. The reliability of some simplifying assumptions was confirmed by computer simulations. Application of these formulae has shown that the power of the 2 designs with population size of 1 000 was 20 when r was for all heritabilities of single gene considered few large families are better than many small families and backcrossing is generally more efficient than intercrossing.
