A variety of medications and herbal preparations have laxative effects. Pathophysiology Diarrhea occurs when the normal absorptive mechanism of the small intestine and colon is overwhelmed by excessive fluid secretion and hypermotility. The overall result is the passage of multiple frequent stools. Diarrhea is most objectively defined as the passage of more than 200 mL 200 g of stool per day.
