Regardless of your preference this section shares some leader guide strategies that our facilitators have found helpful. It also contains sample guide pages to illustrate the techniques. Chapter 2 also provided guidance on creating leader guides. Leader Guide Design Strategies Keep the production tasks separate from the facilitation tasks. Ideally you want to be able to glance at what the producer is doing without letting these tasks distract you. Our solution is to have the production notes and facilitation notes on facing adjacent pages. In this way you can reference the production tasks while following your own sequence of facilitation tasks. See Figure a simplified version of a leader guide layout. Include time guidelines in your leader guide. These serve as reminders and help you get back on track if you find yourself off schedule. At the front of the guide I give time approximations for each slide. Then I indicate more prominent milestones with timing icons a watch face . For instance after the first major exercise there might be an icon and the message You should have one hour left at this point. When you re teaching it s much easier to see at a glance how much time you have left rather than how many minutes you just spent on a slide see Figure . Since the producer has the same information he or she can monitor the time and provide feedback to the trainer when an exercise takes longer than expected.
