This alloy is an improved version of Type 329 7-Mo which has increased resistance to intergranular corrosion in weld and heat-affected zones reducing the risk of preferential weld attack. Postweld heat treatment is not necessary for most applications. The ferrite matrix helps to minimize the danger of chloride stress-corrosion cracking and the presence of austenite increases the toughness as compared to a fully ferritic structure. Duplex Chromium and molybdenum impart a high level of resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The yield strength is more than twice that of Type 316. Applications include heat exchangers in petroleum refining chemical pulp and paper and allied industries where improved properties in the welded areas are required. Other applications include caustic evaporators piping systems for cooling water in power generating plants food processing equipment and as a possible replacement for Types 316 or 316L in marine environments.
