Communication between computers and ourselves is mediated by operating systems that allow us to access the various programmes and packages in the University. The most usual environment, as the systems are known, is Windows. This is controlled mainly through pointing and clicking the mouse at various icons on the screen. Another environment is UNIX, which is similar to MS DOS in that the commands are typed rather than selected with the mouse.
