Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons CAHs widely used for degreasing and cleaning of engines auto parts and electronic components are serious contaminants at 358 major hazardous wastes sites in the United States. CAHs migrate vertically through soils to form dense nonaqueous phase liquids DNAPLs on aquifer bottoms. Chlorinated organics are also frequently found in mixed wastes those containing radioactive contaminants . The Environmental Protection Agency EPA s Emergency Response Notification System recorded almost 3600 accidents involving PCBs between 1988 and 1992. These facts highlight the need to develop methods to decontaminate soils sludges and aggregates containing chloroorganic compounds to include both ex situ and in situ methods 1-6 . Portable remediation methods that can be located at the contaminated site are needed to reduce the costs of transporting large volumes of soil to an off-site treatment location.
