And there is a test about buying and booking on the Internet. | O t Novel 3 describing towns This is an extract from At the End of the Day by Stan Sedgwick. The mine was always the heart of the town. All the men worked down the mine because there was nothing else to do unless you became a vicar or a professional footballer. And in the last ten years Moxton had had just one of each. Dennis Parker who was small and very white had gone down south to be a vicar and Jimmy Sniffer Shaw was the nearest thing Moxton had to a famous son. He played centre forward for Leeds and one game for England. Should have had more. The mine company ran die Working Men s Club too. Some of the greatest comedians in the country came to Moxton to tell their jokes at the Working Men s Club. This was the 1930 s radio was around but nobody was very interested. Television hadn t started at all. The comedians toured the country telling the same jokes over and over again. Nobody had heard them before because nobody went anywhere outside their own home town. People lived and died in Moxton without ever visiting Featherbridge and that s the village five miles away. People always ate the same things every day of the week in those days too. Friday was always fish There was always beef for Sunday dinner. That is of course if somebody was working to provide the money. No money and it was greens every day if you were lucky. As late as World War II there were kids in the town who couldn t walk properly because they didn t get any vitamins. Rickets they called it. You could see little kids limping down the town s main street with rickets. The main street was about all there was of Moxton too. The houses on either side of it were one line of tiny cottages all covered in black from the mine. When you walked in you were right in the main room. There was no hall or anything. There was a tin bath in the main room where the miner father washed himself in the evening after his wife had heated up the water and carried it in. Sunday was different of course. Sunday was church .
