ME can be expressed as apparent metabolizable energy AME . AME has been the traditional measure of ME in nutritional studies of birds. AME values of feed ingredients for poultry in Vietnam have been estimated with Nehring method an indirect method . This method is not correct. Therefore it is necessary to determine AME with a direct method. Samples of soybeans of 11 varieties viz. AK03 B10 Cuc Luc Ngan D912 DH4 DT12 DT84 DT93 L m Vang TH4 and V74 usedfor feeding poultry were collected from Northern provinces of Vietnam. Chemical analuses were made to determine nutrient composition gross energy GE and AME. AME was determined with the direct method developed by Farrell 1978 . Results indicated that the nutrient composition of soybeans varied from variety to variety. For example the content of CP as of dry matter of soybean of a single variety ranged from to respectively for TH4 and DT93. Differences in GE and AME determined with the direct and indirect methods were inconsistent. AME values of 11 soybean varieties determined with the direct method ranged from 3554 to 3892 kcal kg dry matter which were different from the values determined with the indirect method. The variation in AME of 11 soybean varieties determined with the direct and indirect methods indicated that cAME of feed ingredients for poultry in Vietnam should be determined with the direct method prior to using them.
