Don t forget to ask your speech and language therapist for resources such as this. Goals Try to have a series of small goals that you and your child can work towards. It helps to write them down - you don t have to spend hours writing dear diary entries a simple one-line goal at the start of each week on your calendar will suffice. A series of weeks may go something like this Week 1 Prepare and introduce a book of favourite things. Week 2 Encourage Tommy to spend two five-minute sessions a day looking at it with me. Note have a reward ready. Week 3 Aim to have Tommy sit next to me while I talk about the book. Introducing Books and Reading 233 Week 4 Introduce a real book sitting at a distance. and so on. Your ultimate goal will probably be for example Week 12 Aim to read a complete book start to finish and be sure Tommy is able to point to all objects and label six of them himself. Obviously this is only a guide. Be realistic. Look at what your child is capable of now and don t reach too far too soon. If your child is nonverbal now it would be foolish to expect him to be labelling objects in three months. Work on pointing understanding and finding ways for him to communicate to you that he wants to read. Only prepare two-three weeks goals at a time seeing three-months worth stretching ahead will only make you feel despondent at such a huge task. Plus your child may surprise you and romp through three-weeks worth in four days or make much slower progress than you aimed for. Ten minutes a day may not seem much but remember you re probably doing this alongside other activities with their own goals. Start
