The next step is to choose the hostname and port. This step depends on the protocol you chose in the previous step. If you chose TCP IP you are prompted for the hostname and the port number. The hostname is the name of the machine on which the listener process is running. The port number is the listening location for the listener. The default port is 1521 see Figure 11.21 . For Oracle 11g the service name does not have to be the same as the ORACLE_SID because a database can have multiple service names. In Oracle 11g the service name is normally the same as the global database name. This is the service name that is supplied to the listener so the listener has to be listening for this service. You can also choose whether this service is for Oracle8z or 632 Chapter 11 Understanding Network Architecture later databases or Oracle8z and previous databases. You can also select the connection type from one of these choices Database Default Û Shared Server Û Dedicated Server Figure 11.22 shows an example of the Oracle Net Manager service name screen. 5. The last step is to test the net service name and verify that all the connection information entered is correct. Click the Test button to test the network connection. Click Finish button to create the tnsnames.ora entry. You can edit the entry as shown in Figure 11.23. This creates and saves the tnsnames.ora file.
