This chapter explores thin-client/server computing and discusses the pros and cons of deploying Terminal Services to support a thin-client/server infrastructure in your enterprise. Thin-client/server technology has been proven to drastically lower total cost of ownership, and it virtually eliminates workstation obsolescence in a vast majority of computer applications. It is also a cost-effective, rapid, and simple means of deploying a native Windows 2000 network, in which all clients connect to Windows 2000 desktops, in a legacy Windows environment | Terminal Services and Thin Client Integration This chapter explores thin-client server computing and discusses the pros and cons of deploying Terminal Services to support a thin-client server infrastructure in your enterprise. Thin-client server technology has been proven to drastically lower total cost of ownership and it virtually eliminates workstation obsolescence in a vast majority of computer applications. It is also a cost-effective rapid and simple means of deploying a native Windows 2000 network in which all clients connect to Windows 2000 desktops in a legacy Windows environment. In This Chapter Terminal Services Architecture Planning Terminal Services Terminal Services Installation and Deployment Thin-Client Server Computing No other Windows 2000 architecture causes more anxiety or apprehension than Terminal Services TS . No other architecture has the power to turn your IT department on its head than Terminal Services. TS represents a major paradigm shift in computing in general and client server C S computing in particular. As simple as it is we have found that many administrators shy away from the TS subject although that is beginning to change with the advent of Windows 2000 . Thin-client services would have been a better description of this service because terminal emulation is a little archaic. Client software not unlike a Web browser in purpose is able 916 Part VII Interoperation and Integration Services to receive only the display and user interaction logic key strokes and mouse clicks at the terminal while all processing execution and storage access takes place on the server. Essentially this data is miniscule and does not need significant bandwidth 10 to 28Kbps to travel between the client and the server. This user experience for many applications is sufficient even over the Internet to provide enterprise-wide access to computing resources. No application logic travels the network and no application data needs to be transported from the client .
