Designing a lesson based on kolb’s experiential learning model for primary mathematics education

This paper presents a sample of Mathematics lesson which adapts the experiential learning model developed by David Kolb. The theoretical knowledge of experiential learning, the nature of mathematics education, and an exemplary mathematics lesson based on experiential learning approach, are also revised. Keywords: Experiential learning, teaching and learning, mathematics education. 1. INTRODUCTION Education is the cornerstone of every nation’s economic and social development. It is the key that creates greater opportunities for integration and globalization. Recently, the issue of educational innovation has been a central focus of research attention in many countries. Thus, educators and teachers have now been required to seek for a more upgraded and advanced teaching and learning approach to meet the current demand in teaching and learning practices: a shift from a content-based approach to a competence-based approach. In this trend, experiential learning (EL) is acknowledged as a meaningful approach that can help solve problems in teaching and learning practices. Though it has been studied and applied in many schools all over the world and in Vietnam, EL is not popular and rarely applied among the teachers, especially at primary education level. In Mathematics Education (ME), students often have difficulty in understanding Mathematics .
