Index pollicization has been widely applied in the world to restore function and aesthetics of the hand. In 2018 the Orthopedic Department of the Vietnam National Children s Hospital started implementing Index pollicization to treat congenital thumb hypoplasia. Methods The study was carried out on 8 patients with 9 hypoplastic thumbs who underwent index pollicization operation using the Buck - Gramcko s technique from May 2018 to November 2021 at the National Children s Hospital. The patients were examined to assess the range of motion sensation and function of the pollicized digit. The study also evaluated the patient s parents satisfaction with the new pollicized thumb appearance and function. Results The pollicizied digit had lower range of motions than the normal thumb and the sensation was normal in all patients postoperatively. The hand function was improved markedly when handling large objects. 50 of the patient s parents were satisfied with the appearance and function of the new pollicized thumb. Conclusions Index finger pollicization was initially effective in the treatment of severe hypoplasia or aplasia thumb the function and appearance of the hand are significantly improved after surgery.
